Afonwen Laundry employs over 160 people and has the capacity to handle over 750,000 items of linen a week in Pwllheli, North Wales,, making it one of the largest, independently-owned, production facilities in the whole of the United Kingdom.
We've invested over £6 million since 1999 when we moved to our current site and we only buy the best laundry equipment in the world from Kanneigiesser, the worldwide market leader in supplying laundry equipment.
So confident are we with their machinery that we've asked them to built us a new state-of-the-art new production facility in Cardiff in which we are currently investing £5 million to deliver one of the fastest ever new laundry openings and a production unit capable of handling a further 500,000 items of linen per week, providing us with bags of capacity, enabling the combined business to handle over 1.2 million items of linen a week.
In the run up to the 2010 Ryder Cup being held in Newport there is huge investment taking place in South Wales and we are proud to be part of the build up to putting South Wales on the international stage.
Both our production facilities have two giant washing machines that each take 50kg of linen each every 2 minutes of the working day. We have four ironers in North Wales, each specialising in processing key products – sheets, table linen, duvet covers and smaller items such as napkins and pillowcases and three high performance machines in South Wales. We've also heavily invested in automatic towel folding machines, enabling customers to receive perfectly folded towels.
Each year, we continue to invest heavily in new equipment and review how we can continue to improve and develop our business.
We carefully manage the volume of work we process through meticulous planning to ensure it has the capacity to handle the increasing volumes of work required to operate efficiently in today's highly competitive textile rental market.
Afonwen has also been at the forefront of adopting the latest state-of-the-art quality control measures by becoming the first linen hire company in the world to install scanning technology on every ironing line that it has in its production facility.
This enables us to carefully monitor to the quality of all major items of linen through the production line before they are sent out to customers, with items not meeting the standard required rejected before they are sent out to ensure customers receive a consistent quality all year round.
We also have a team of seven highly-qualified engineers ensuring that the machinery is fully maintained and regularly serviced to ensure any downtimes in our production facility are kept to an absolute minimum to ensure that we maintain a high degree of consistency in terms of the reliability of the service we give to our customers.
Afonwen continuously seeks to improve upon the high standards of service it already offers through careful auditing and monitoring of its service, benchmarking its operation against its competitors. Afonwen also undertakes reviews of other linen suppliers within the United Kingdom as well as overseas to ensure it remains ahead of the industry and its competitors in delivering exceptional service and quality. In recent years, we have visited other laundries throughout the United Kingdom as well as seeing other production facilities in a number of countries abroad including Germany, Belgium, Ireland and the United States of America.
We welcome visits to our production facility by existing and potential customers as well as fellow industry colleagues (so long as you don't compete directly against us!) and, if you would like to arrange a tour to see how we operate, please feel free to get in touch to arrange a visit.
